Jewellery Information

Silver Jewellery

Pure silver 999.9 is bright white metal that is too soft for most jewellery. To make the silver workable and wearable a small amount of other substances are added to the silver, often copper is added to pure silver to make a more durable metal, commonly known as standard or Sterling Silver. For example out of 1000 parts, 925 are silver and the remaining 75 are copper. Hence the name and mark of 925 silver.

Silver, of course, is known for its shiny "silver" hue when used in its polished state, but also is gaining popularity in a duller matte finish or a combination of the polished and matte. When you are purchasing sterling silver look for the stamp of "925" which indicates the item has a silver content of almost 93 percent silver. The seven percent alloy gives the silver hardness and durability. Without the alloy, the silver piece would be too soft to wear.

Gold Jewellery

Pure gold is non reactive and is skin friendly to most people. If you suffer from any skin problem, may be your gold item has been mixed with some other metal, which is reacting and causing some kind of allergy.
Purity of gold is measured in terms of Karat. Karat can vary from 10k to 12,14, 18, 22 and 24 k. The more the karat number, the greater is the gold purity. If you are looking out for pure gold then you should opt for 24 K gold. Rest of the karats have one or the other metal mixed like 18 K gold jewellery ensures 18 segments of gold and 10 parts include some other metal type. 12 K is semi gold as in just 50% of gold.
Pure gold is expensive and not very practical to wear owing to its extra softness. Therefore, it is mixed with other metals mainly copper and silver. For an item of jewellery to be classed as solid gold it has to be a minimum of 10 Karat.
Gold is mixed with other metals to change the natural colour of the gold, Silver, palladium, copper and occasionally zinc are added in different proportions to make the different colours of gold. The lower the Karat the more different colours can be created because there are more parts that are not pure gold.

Caring for your Silver and Gold Jewellery

Always keep your jewellery separately, preferably in a cloth pouch or jewellery box in order to prevent scratching and tarnishing. Always avoid exposing it to household chemicals, such as bleach or chlorinated water. It's normal for silver to tarnish when it reacts with sulphur or hydrogen sulphide in the ambient air. It can be easily removed by polishing with cloth or solutions specifically formulated for silver cleaning, which can be found in any hardware store.

Jewellery Hallmarks

A hallmark is an official mark or series of marks struck on items made of precious metals platinum, gold, silver and in some nations, palladium. In a more general sense, the term hallmark can also be used to refer to any distinguishing characteristic or trait.
Hallmarking is an ancient method of safeguarding consumers, and the word itself, stems from 'marking goods at the (Goldsmiths) Hall’.
Hallmarking involves testing articles made from precious metal and marking them to indicate that they are of a minimum standard of purity.
